SPANISH WINE

THE WINE IN SPAIN

Wine is Art, wine is Culture.

The grapevine, with the almond tree and the olive tree, forms the three pillars of the agriculture on the Iberian Peninsula, without which one cannot understand the economy and the culture of Spain.  We have discovered in tombs dating from the Bronze Age, seeds of grapes and containers with deposits of unfermented grape juice.

The techniques of culture, the production and even the best Mediterranean stock of vine arrived with the Phoenician.

The Iberian lands appeared especially capable for the cultivation of grapes that became the pride of the countryside. It produced wines that became famous under the name of "Vinos de Hispania", "Wines of Spain".  The geographers and historians mention them, the poets sing their goodness.

The machinery and tools for wine making like the presses, have existed for a long time in Spain providing names of Greek or Latin origin that are still used in this industry. For example the word "ton", unit of measure, comes from "tonnel" (barrel carried in boats). The "barrel" comes from barro (mud in Spanish) used to manufactured containers, before our modern era.

Spanish wine has reached in the last twenty years a high-quality level, being situated, without pretension, in the first ranked in a world dominated by France, California and Newzealand.  The methods of production of the best Spanish wines can be compared with the best techniques in oenology. We think that the use of temperature control "coolers" was a determining factor in Spain.

To the Spanish wines elaborated with Cabernet Sauvignon or Chardonnay, that came from the Médoc and Burgundy regions, it is necessary to add the very good Spanish wine varieties, such as Tempranillo, Garnacha or Albariño plus some others less known, that may enrich the present quality that is offered. For instance, the Monastrel, a Mediterranean vine.

The Tempranillo grape, characteristic of the Rioja region, is the noblest red grapes, of Spanish origin. It provide a definite elegance and it is a safeguard for the success of aging.

The all countryside is covered of vineyards and offers a great choice of Spanish wines.  Also with France, Spain is the only country using the label D.O. Denomination of Origin.  Spain counts more than 35 D.O. coming from all the country regions.

ALICANTE & MURCIA REGION:

These two regions are well known for there wines coming from the sunny vineyards. Alicante get its wine reputation, from the harbor. Sending wine all over the world that proceed from the numerous vineyards of this province but also from Murcia. The Murcia Road of wins offers three D.O. named Bullas, Jumilla and Yecla The altitude of the region is from 500 to 1.000 m high with a sunny and pretty dry climate.

This region is about to change for the best, thanks to a new generation of owners and oenologists, who know how to best utilise the modern methods of cultivation and way of wine making.  The contribution of the controlled irrigation for vine cultivation and also refrigeration in the way of wine making process, have been the determining factors for development of high quality wines in this area.  All these wines often have got the Ecological label.
